| Biography | |
| I was educated at Batley Grammar School and Portora Royal School Enniskillen and then studied medicine TCD. I completed pre-registration house officer posts in the UK and then served as a medical officer in the Royal Navy. I completed my higher training in general practice, and worked predominantly in Emergency Medicine. Since completing my MSc in Sports Medicine in 1995 I have worked as lecturer in Anatomy, course coordinator MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine and Medical Officer to the Human Performance Laboratory in the TCD Anatomy department. | |

| Teaching interests and responsibilities | |
| Currently I teach pre-clinical undergraduate anatomy to 1st and 2nd year medical students, I also teach musculoskeletal anatomy and neuroanatomy to physiotherpay students and 1st year occupational therapy students. I am also the course coordinator for the MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine course; in this role I am responsible for approximately one third of the course delivery; including self directed learning of musculoskeletal and neuroanatomy, lectures in exercise physiology and clinical workshops in all aspects of sports medicine. I have a particular teaching interest in musculoskeletal anatomy and its clinical application to emergency, sports and orthopaedic medicine. | |

| Description of Research Interests |
| The aim of my current doctoral research is to evaluate the relationship of bone quantity, by DEXA measurement of Bone mineral Density, to the strength of bone. Using a large animal model of osteoporosis I am quantifying bone density at five sites in the ovine skeleton. I hope to relate bone density and strength at these sites with mechanical tests later this year. My other research interests are in the the fields of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. Allied to my service provider role as an exercise physiologist and sports physician in the Human performance Laboratory I have conducted research into factors affecting performance in Rowing and Kayaking Ergometry, fatigue states in athletes such as Overtraining Syndrome, and laboratory and field based testing of athletes with exercise induced asthma. In collaboration with the IRFU, I have also conducted research into the use of sports drinks for use in training recovery strategies. I am currently involved in studies profiling and monitoring exercise responses to training in endurance sports, and cardiovascular health profiling in a collegiate population. |
