Biography
Agnes is an Associate Professor in mental Health and Head of the School of Nursing & Midwifery. She is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Registered General Nurse and Registered Nurse Tutor, and holds a BNS (Hons) degree from UCD, a Master of Science in Educational Management from DCU and Doctorate in Philosophy from Trinity College Dublin. She is a Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science, Chairperson of the Irish Institute of Mental Health Nursing and member of the Mental Health Commission research committee. She has over 25 years experience of clinical practice and education in the areas of mental health, general nursing and palliative care. Her research expertise and activities lie within Mental Health and Sexual Health. Her research contribution is organised around (i) the implementation and evaluation of recovery oriented service for people with mental health care needs and (ii) sexuality and sexual health. She is currently involved in a number of research projects within her areas of research interest. In recent years she has attracted funds from external peer adjudicated grant agencies and, with colleagues, have been awarded €325,000 in research funding in the last five years including €200,000 as PI or joint PI. She holds, or has held awards, from the Health Research Board (Ireland), the Mental Health Commission, GLEN, the Irish Family Planning Association, the Irish Hospice Foundation and the Health Services Executive (Ireland). She has reviewing commitments for 5 nursing, or research journals and has published and presented widely, both nationally and internationally on nursing clinical and education issues.
 
Teaching interests and responsibilities
Her teaching interests are in all aspects of psychiatric nursing and mental health, and specifically sexuality, sexual health, recovery, gender issues and mental healthand theoretical models of mental health and mental illness. She contributes to teaching on research methods and have specific expertise in interpretive and critical theory approaches to research. She has a strong track record in curriculum reform and development and have led the development of curricula at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including the development of the first diploma in psychiatric nursing and the first Bachelor of Nursing degree with Dublin City University, the postgraduate diploma in clinical health science education with Trinity College.

Description of Research Interests
Her primary research, funded by the Health Research Board, the Crisis Pregnancy Agency, the National Disability Authority, the Mental Health Comission and the Irish Hospice Foundation has focused on issues around sexualities, sexual health, mental health and illness. Populations researched include people who have experienced mental health problems, women from disadvantaged areas andt he Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual population. Other research interests included education for health professionals, with projects focusing on creative and innovative teaching and assessment strategies, developments in clinical education for psychiatric nurses and educational provision for practitioners in mental health.
