Description of Research Interests
Implementing and evaluating Health care interventions and innovationsin chronic illness: Effectiveness of an educational intervention on symptom response time in acute coronary syndrome patients. Improving outcomes in COPD using telehealth. Outcomes of Phase III cardiac rehabilitation: Longitudinal changes in Quality of life, stages of change and exercise. Understanding the determinants of health:Physical activity in the aged, the factors that influence this and the influence of physical activity on health particularly cardiovascular health. Understanding the determinants of ill health: The longitudinal modification of lifestyle factors in cardiovascular patients particularly exercise. Determinants of physical activity in cardiac population. The factors that influence pre hospital delay time in Acute Coronary Syndrome patients. Other : Student learning styles and approaches.Evaluation of e-learning developments in the biological sciences component of the nursing degree. The needs of mature students in nurse education.

Research Projects
Project title The Psoriasis Patient Experience and Impact Survey
Summary Following a small study to evaluate overall Psorisis satistaction with the servise the team has now developed an indepth questionnaire to audit and evaluate the impact of the attending the nurse led course of phototherapy and the factors that influence this impact. Research team: kelly Impey (AMNCH), Michelle Greenwood(AMNCH), Carmel Blake (AMNCH), Karen Beesley (AMNCH) Dr Gabrielle McKee

Project title Phase 1:The Effectiveness of a Structured Educational Intervention on the length of pre-hospital delay in patients at risk of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS): ACS RESPONSE TIME -INTERVENTION TRIAL
Summary RCT testing a brief educational intervention and examining its effect on pre hospital delay in acute coronary syndrome patients. The secondary objectives included: to determine factors that influence pre hopsital delay; to determine the impact of the educational intervention on knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about heart disease and ACS symptoms; to compare GTN and ambulance use following an educational intervention; to elucidate the determinants of physical activity in the ACS population and how it changes post cardiac event; to determine intention to attend cardiac rehabilitation, subsequent attendance and the factors that influence this.

Project title Physical activity in the aged population
Summary The Irish Longitudinal study on Ageing (TILDA) is a major inter-institutional initiative led by Trinity College Dublin. The study will involve interviews on a two yearly basis with a sample of 8,000+ people aged 50 and over (or their spouses/partners) of their lives, including the economic (pensions, employment, living standards), health (physical, mental, service needs and usage) and social aspects (contact with friends and kin, formal and informal care, social participation). I am a member of the cardiovascular team within this project and am responsible for the physical activity aspect of this study. During phase 1 we w ill address the reseach question: What are the determinants and influence of physcial activity across the aged cohort?
